  • Added classes to elements on the title slide (thanks, @ccamara, #340). Now the title will be placed inside <div class="title"><h1></h1></div> (previously it was only put inside <h1></h1>), and the subtitle will be placed inside a <div> with class subtitle. Similarly, author, institute, and date will have classes of their names, respectively. This will make it easier to style these elements individually. For example, the CSS selector .title-slide .author can be used to select and style the author(s).

  • When running xaringan::inf_mr(), the Rmd file will be recompiled when any Rmd file under the same directory is updated. This allows for rebuilding the slides when child documents are used and updated. Previously, the Rmd file would be recompiled only if itself is updated (thanks, @jvolkening, #349).

  • Resolved some major shortcut-key conflicts between xaringan and the popular screen reader JAWS for Windows in its virtual cursor environment.

    • In JAWS 16.0.2136 or later, users must keep turning on a setting called "Allow Web Application Reserved Keystrokes," which is enabled by default.
    • The shortcut keys available on the slide help page (press h on any slide to obtain them) are supported.

  • Correctly print output from sql chunks as tables (thanks, @thohan88 @gadenbuie @cderv, #307).

  • The position of headers h1, h2, and h3 were fixed within the useR theme. The logo of the conference was updated within the useR theme in order to match with the recently created visual identity of the conference (thanks, @josschavezf, #288).

  • Added the nhsr theme for the NHS-R Community based on the NHS identity guidelines, and also contributed to the nhsrtheme package (thanks, @spcanelon, #280).

  • The option self_contained: true for the output format xaringan::moon_reader supports images written in the syntax ![]() (Markdown), background-image: url() (background images for slides), and <img src="" /> (HTML) now. Slides generated in the self-contained mode are also much faster to render in web browsers now, especially for slides containing a lot of images (thanks, @srvanderplas #207, @wolass @RLesur @jaredlander #3).

  • The two internal functions xaringan:::protect_math() and xaringan:::prose_index() have been removed. They are in the xfun package now, so please use xfun::protect_math() and xfun::prose_index() instead.

  • Added UiO theme (thanks, @wleoncio, #270).

  • The option anchor_sections is disabled by default in moon_reader(). This option is for rmarkdown::html_document() to generate anchor links for sections, which is not really useful for xaringan slides.

  • The .pull-right CSS class has been updated so that multiple .pull-left/.pull-right columns can be used on one slide (@gandebuie #271, thanks @ramongallego #260).

  • Added a useR theme based on the conference useR2020 guidelines (thanks, @josschavezf, #276).

  • Add nature option autoplay can take either a numeric value, or a list of the form list(interval = N, loop = TRUE). The latter form can be used to specify if the autoplay should restart after reaching the last slide (i.e., go to the first slide). By default, the autoplay will not restart after reaching the last slide. See the help page xaringan::moon_reader for more information (thanks, @pat-s, #266).

  • infinite_moon_reader() now accepts additional arguments via ... that are passed to rmarkdown::render(). This improves the addition of the params argument in infinite_moon_reader() in version 0.14 and allows users to over-ride parameters defined in the top-level YAML in the slides at run time. It also lets users set rendering options, such as quiet = TRUE or setting output_file (thanks @mstr3336, @gadenbuie, #253).

  • Inline <script> tags and JavaScript code chunks in the R Markdown source now run in the browser with xaringan (thanks @gadenbuie, #256).

  • The Infinite Moon Reader (xaringan::inf_mr()) has been significantly enhanced for a much smoother user experience of authoring slides with the xaringan::moon_reader format in RStudio. The preview of the current slide will be instant (as you type in the RStudio editor), and the navigation in the source editor will be linked to the navigation of slides output.   • When printing slides to PDF, only the last slide of a series of incremental slides will be printed (thanks, @sebpardo @@benjie, #192).

  • Added a function decktape() to export slides to PDF via the DeckTape library (thanks, @pat-s, #177).

  • Added a CSS theme uol (University of Leicester) (thanks, @ellessenne, #183).

  • Added a CSS theme fc (thanks, @Yue-Jiang, #189).

  • xaringan::inf_mr() can detect changes in CSS/JS and common images now. When any of these files are changed, it will rebuild the Rmd document and reload the output in the browser (thanks, @mrchypark @tcgriffith, #185).

  • External links (URLs starting with http:// or https://) on slides will be opened in new browser tabs/windows.

BUG FIXES

  • Fixed several long-lasting issues related to MathJax fonts and printing to PDF (#62, #73, #143, #148, #168).

  • The default CSS style for tables should not be applied to the help page of the slides (thanks, @KevCaz, #138).

  • The default CSS file was split into two files default.css and default-fonts.css to make it easier to define custom font styles without copying all base CSS definitions. For example, the css argument of xaringan::moon_reader can take a vector of default and extra.css, and you define your custom font styles in extra.css.

  • For the css argument, if a value does not end with .css, it is assumed to be a built-in CSS file in this package. Currently all available CSS files can be found at https://github.com/yihui/xaringan/tree/master/inst/rmarkdown/templates/xaringan/resources. See ?xaringan::moon_reader for more details. This change was to make it easier for users to contribute custom themes (https://yihui.org/en/2017/10/xaringan-themes/).

  • Added a new sub-option beforeInit under the nature option, which can be used to specify JavaScript files to be executed before the instantiation of slides (i.e., before remark.create()). One application of this new feature is to define custom remark.js macros; see the slide "Macros" at https://slides.yihui.org/xaringan/ for more info (thanks, @gavinsimpson, #80).

  • Line highlighting can also be turned on using a special comment #<< at the end of a line of code now (thanks, @gadenbuie, #103).

  • A class title-slide was added to the automatically generated title slide (moon_reader(seal = TRUE)) so that you can customize the this slide using CSS (thanks, @ekstroem, #7).

  • Added an argument cast_from to infinite_moon_reader() to specify the root directory of the server. Previously the root directory is the directory of the Rmd input file, which makes it impossible for the Rmd document to use resources in upper-level directories (e.g. ![](../gif/cute-kittens.gif)). Now you can set the working directory to the upper-level directory and call inf_mr('relative/path/to/input.Rmd'), so that input.Rmd can use any files under the current working directory ./ (thanks, @pat-s, #29).

BUG FIXES

  • A local copy of MathJax should work with moon_reader() (thanks, @bnicenboim, #13).

  • Skip fenced code blocks when detecting LaTeX math expressions, e.g. $api$ in R code session$api$plot <- ... should not be treated as a math expression (thanks, @jcheng5).

  • Unicode characters can be rendered correctly on Windows now (thanks, @Lchiffon, #20).
