Converting LaTeX to HTML While Preserving Theorem and Definition Numbering

I am working on converting LaTeX files to HTML format. In the original LaTeX documents, definitions and theorems are numbered following a chapter.section scheme, and then by their respective sequence within the section. However, I've encountered an issue during the conversion process: in the HTML output, the numbering of definitions and theorems restarts from 1 in each chapter, resulting in a format like chapter.number (for each theorem or definition). This differs from the original LaTeX numbering style.

Could anyone provide guidance on how to ensure that the HTML output maintains the same numbering format as in the LaTeX files, specifically preserving the chapter.section and sequential numbering?

I apologize if this query has been addressed previously. Despite extensive research and finding some outdated solutions, I have not yet found a definitive answer. Any assistance or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

There's no way to achieve precise matching of the numbers; LaTeX's numbering facilities outstrip what pandoc does.

One thing you could try, though, would be putting each section in a separate file and using --file-scope. This should restart the numbering for each section, but you won't get section.number numbers, you'll just have the number.

The following filter can create the desired format for theorems, but it adds one line above where theorem starts, something like this:

You also need the --file-scope option. (But in any case this would not give you chapter.section.number.)
