Why would we interpret a n-variate polynomial as a (n+1)-variate homogeneous polynomial?

In the Polynomial package, sometimes a n-variate polynomial is interpreted as a (n+1)-variate homogeneous polynomial. What is it useful? Just wondering.

I'm currently working on a Haskell package dealing with polynomials and I'm wondering whether this could be useful for me.
